What Could a Poorly Managed Project Cost You? – SHINE Calculator

What could a poorly managed project cost you?

Enter a few numbers based on your project's reality. The calculator shows how quickly delays, cost overruns and lost value turn into a serious business problem.

The default is conservative. Research shows organisations waste an average of 11.4% of investment; IT projects commonly overrun by 27–45%.

The benefit the project should create: savings, revenue, capacity, quality, reduced risk or strategic value.

Include strategic value – delayed revenue ramp-up, blocked capacity, missed opportunities.

A conservative estimate of value loss. Research on large IT projects reports up to 56% lower actual business value than originally planned.

The default reflects the entry-level package. Increase for broader support, workshops or a longer engagement.

Methodology and sources

This calculation is an illustrative estimate, not a guarantee. It combines three typical sources of project loss: delays, cost overruns and failure to deliver expected value. The default values are set conservatively.

They are based on research showing that organisations waste an average of 11.4% of investment due to poor project performance; typical IT projects overrun budgets by approximately 27%, large IT projects by up to 45%, and large IT projects may deliver up to 56% less actual business value than originally anticipated.

The actual impact depends on project type, organisational context, leadership decisions, quality of brief, resource availability and change management capability.
